Polishing Metal the Right Way

Most avid outdoors men and women will own at least one knife. Whether this knife is for skinning their game, or cutting fishing line when it gets a little too taught; there's a reason people have been keeping blades close at hand for thousands of years. There are dozens of different types of metal, with softer stainless steels, all the way to carbon steel that's capable of lasting for years without any damage. You can typically tell the quality of a blade depending on how well they hold up over the course of a few months. Cheaper steel will often remain entirely rust free, hence stainless steel being so useful for cutlery and kitchen utensils. Quality steel will often rust however, and treating this rust and staining can go a long way in keeping the blade efficient as the years progress. Here's a look at the best methods for cleaning metal - many of which are often overlooked in favor of expensive alternatives from stores!

White Vinegar

Vinegar is one of the best anti-bacterial ingredients on the planet, and it's more than capable of eating away at even the most stubborn rust stains. The acidic properties within white vinegar are particularly useful when cleaning blades, and as vinegar is fairly cheap; it's a great alternative to the expensive metal-cleaning brands. The best way to clean rust away is to rub in small, circular motions using a cotton pad. Don't over-do the vinegar either, as too much will run. Just a small dab of vinegar is sufficient, and a few minutes of rubbing the rusted area will lift away anything up to deep pitting.

Bicarbonate of Soda

Bicarb might not be the first thing that you think of for stain removal (outside of laundry), but the truth is that it's an incredibly effective cleaner when it comes to metal - in particular steel and iron. It can be quite abrasive, so it's best to use it once or twice a month at most. It removes stains like nothing else at the same price, and it's even capable of polishing bone and wooden handles. Just sprinkle a little bicarbonate of soda on to a cotton pad or microfiber cloth, and then rub your blade in circular motions. You'll be able to watch the stains and rust lift away in a matter of minutes.

Lemon Juice

Lemon juice is possibly the most effective cleaner, and it works as both a cleaning agent and a polish. Follow the same step as mentioned above and be sure that your cotton pad isn't too over-loaded with lemon juice (the fresher the lemon the better). Rather than wiping the juice away, allow it to dry onto the blade of your knife and it will form a protective layer. This layer can sometimes dry to a powdery-white, so once dried just use a soft cloth to wipe away any residue and you'll be good to go.
